Inspiring Confidence, Improving Looks & Changing Lives

Ace Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive surgery is performed to treat structures of the body affected aesthetically or functionally by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is generally done to improve function and ability, but may also be performed to achieve a more typical appearance of the affected structure.

Breast reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure to restore the breast’s appearance and feel to its pre-surgery state. A plastic surgeon who has received specialized training to do this operation performs it. It frequently requires multiple operations. To make both breasts look the same, surgery may also be required on the breast that was cancer-free.

The choice to have breast reconstruction is highly individual. Before undergoing surgery, it’s crucial to discuss breast reconstruction with both your cancer surgeon and a plastic surgeon. Some women decide to have reconstruction because they believe it will restore their sense of comfort, confidence, and self-awareness after a mastectomy. Some ladies choose to undergo this procedure in order to avoid wearing an external breast prosthesis. Others decide against breast reconstruction because they don’t want to undergo another surgery.

Because of their general health, the quantity of tissue they have left for reconstruction, or other factors, some women cannot have breast reconstruction. If breast reconstruction is not an option, your plastic surgeon will inform you of this.

Types of breast reconstruction

Breast implants

A breast implant is a round or tear-shaped sac made of rubberized silicone. It is filled with sterile salt water (called saline) or silicone gel. If the skin and tissues in the chest are too tight or flat for the surgeon to place the implant, they will need to make the space larger. This is called tissue expansion. Our surgeons will discuss this with you in further details if this is the case.

Autologous breast reconstruction

Autologous breast reconstruction uses fat and muscle tissues from other parts of your body to create a new breast. It can also be used for women who have had part of a breast removed, to rebuild the part that was removed. An autologous reconstructed breast has a more natural feel than a breast implant.

Nipple and areola reconstruction

If a woman had a nipple-sparing mastectomy, the nipple and the dark-coloured skin around the nipple (called the areola) will still be in place. If the nipple and areola were removed, the surgeon can also rebuild them to create a more natural-looking breast. This procedure is done after the reconstructed breast settles into its final shape, which is usually 3–6 months after breast reconstruction.

Wound Care : Wound classification

There are many causes to the develop wounds and most people can heal minor cuts and abrasions without any intervention.  However wounds involving large surface areas, deep tissue layers, infections or wounds found in patients with chronic illness often does not heal without intervention.  Ace Plastic Surgery Centre, located in Mombasa, Kenya brings together the specialized wound care knowledge of Dr. Peter Biribwa Kansiime and the access to a comprehensive repertoire of treatment methods for management of different types of wounds.

Wounds can be broken down into two generalized categories: acute wounds and chronic wounds.  Depending on the type of wound and the cause for the wound, ie cuts, burns, infections, there are different management methods to not only help patient’s heal their wounds but help that attain the best functional and aesthetic outcome.

Acute wound

This is any surgical wound that heals by primary intention or any traumatic or surgical wound that heals by secondary intention. An acute wound is expected to progress through the phases of normal healing, resulting in the closure of the wound.

Chronic wound

This is a wound that fails to progress healing or respond to treatment over the normal expected healing time frame (4 weeks) and becomes “stuck” in the inflammatory phase. This pathologic inflammation is due to a postponed, incomplete or uncoordinated healing process. Wound healing is delayed by the presence of intrinsic and extrinsic factors including medications, poor nutrition, co-morbidities or inappropriate dressing selection.

Oncoplastic Surgery

Oncoplastic surgery is an evolving field that entails tumor excisions that leave defects.
Oncoplastic techniques ensure complete cancer / tumor excisions and complete and functional reconstructions.

It is commonly performed for skin lesions, head , neck and facial tumors, breast cancers and gynaecological cancers.

The end result is an excised tumor and possibly improved aesthetic appearance.
